Hot and cold
Bea has travelled the world. At least going from south to north on one line of longitude. It's true. Her first long trip was by car to the very north of Sweden in winter. We stayed at this breathtaking house in the middle of the Swedish version of nowhere and had the most magnificent Christmas and New Years all the while it was - 36°C (around -32°F) outside. Bea loved it. The deep snow, the crisp air, the scents. Everything. After this 3000 km (roughly 1800 miles) trip up north, we went down south to bella Italia during summer. That was a big challenge, especially with making sure her paws were kept cool on the burning sidewalks. But Bea is amazing and she enjoyed the ocean, the sand and chasing seagulls in +30°C (86°F) sunshine. She's a travel-girl and I think you and your dog can have just as much fun on adventures as we us.
Be prepared
But as Scar has been saying it all these years: Be prepared! Not only when planning a coup, but also when traveling with your dog. And to make it as easy for you as caninely (is that a new word?) possible: Here's our version of a dog-friendly travel packing list to ensure you have everything you need for your next outdoor adventure. Of course a lot of stuff is self-explanatory or might not be so different to everyday life, but the devil is in the details.
The list
Essentials:
1. Travel Crate or Carrier: Provide a safe and comfortable space for your dog during travel, whether by car or train. (Plane traveling will be a separate post in the future).
2. Leash and Collar/Harness: Ensure you are able to control your properly during walks.
3. Identification Tags: Include up-to-date ID tags with your dog's name, your contact information, and proof of rabies vaccination. Be sure to check all rules of the country you're going to. Just as an example: Going to the UK with your dog. Or to Sweden, as we did.
4. Travel Documents: Carry your dog's vaccination records, health certificate (if traveling internationally), and any required permits or paperwork. Also see link above.
5. Food and Water Bowls: Pack collapsible or portable bowls for feeding and watering your dog on the go.
6. Food and Treats: Bring enough of your dog's regular food to last the duration of the trip, along with a supply of treats for rewards and snacks. We always pack at least 2 days extra worth of food. And we always bring Bugbell treats. Check them out here (aff).
7. Water: Carry a supply of fresh water for your dog, especially if traveling to areas where water availability may be limited.
8. Bedding: Bring a familiar blanket or bed for your dog to sleep on, providing comfort and familiarity during travel.
9. Waste Bags: Pack biodegradable waste bags for cleaning up after your dog during walks and potty breaks.
10. Medications: Remember to bring any necessary medications or supplements your dog may need.
11. First Aid Kit: Include basic first aid supplies such as bandages, antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and a digital thermometer.
12. Toys and Entertainment: Bring a selection of toys and chews to keep your dog entertained and occupied during travel downtime.
13. Grooming Supplies: Pack a brush or comb, nail clippers, and any other grooming tools your dog may need to stay clean and comfortable, especially if your trip is longer than a week.
14. Safety Gear: Consider bringing a reflective leash or collar, a light-up collar attachment for nighttime walks, and a life jacket if you'll be near water.
Optional Extras:
15. Portable Dog Bed: For outdoor adventures or camping trips, a portable dog bed provides a cozy spot for your dog to relax.
16. Cooling Vest / Bandana / Bed: Keep your dog cool in hot weather with a cooling vest / bandana or bed that helps regulate body temperature. We have one, we never needed it.
17. Dog Backpack: If your dog enjoys carrying their own gear, a dog backpack allows them to help with carrying supplies during hikes or walks.
18. Travel Blanket or Towel: Pack a lightweight blanket or towel for impromptu picnics, outdoor lounging, or drying off after water activities. Last part is really important, keep your dog dry!
19. Dog-Friendly Travel Guide: Research dog-friendly attractions, accommodations, and restaurants at your destination and bring along a travel guide or app for recommendations. We've found the cutest spots that way!
