How cool are you?

Let's be honest: You might be Cpt. Archer having Porthos on his lap cool, but how cool can you stay when your little bundle of fur and joy gets hurt? That's right. You might get all crazy with worries and the darkest pictures in your head. But fear not. Preparation is everything! In my list about toxic plants for example, I've told you about 12 plants that your dog won't be very fond of. And in this here list, I'll give you all the pointers you need to competently and calmly deliver first aid for your dog. We've been extremely lucky with Bea, since she never actually ate something toxic or hurt herself badly. One reason might be, that we trained her well. For starters check out my list on 10 essential commands and how to teach your dog new tricks.

The list

1. Stay Calm:

Keep your composure to avoid stressing your dog further.

2. Muzzle if Necessary:

Even friendly dogs can bite when in pain.

3. Assess the Situation:

Determine if the injury is life-threatening or if immediate vet care is needed.

4. Stop Bleeding:

Apply pressure to wounds with a clean cloth or bandage.

5. Perform CPR:

If your dog is unconscious and not breathing, administer chest compressions and rescue breaths. But only if you know why your dog is unconscious, like electrocution, drowning, or choking.

6. Treat Burns:

Cool burns with cold water for several minutes and cover with a non-stick dressing.

7. Remove Toxins:

If you suspect that your dog has ingested poison, consult a vet immediately; do not induce vomiting unless instructed. Give clear information on what poison you suspect.

8. Stabilize Fractures:

Use a splint or padded board to immobilize the limb.

9. Eye Injuries:

Rinse with saline solution and cover with a damp cloth; seek vet care.

10. Heatstroke:

Move to a cool area, offer water, and wet the dog's body with cool (not cold) water. Also check out my list on keeping cool with your dog.

Bonus

11. Choking:

If your dog is choking, look inside its mouth to see if you can remove the object carefully. If not, perform the Heimlich maneuver. For further pro instructions, go to petMD's page.

12. Insect Bites/Stings:

Apply a cold pack to reduce swelling and monitor for allergic reactions. If swelling or distress increases, seek veterinary care immediately.

Calm

With all this dread and fear I'd like to end this post with something wholesome. And there is nothing more wholesome to me than little Bea being just herself and living her best life. So here you go. Calm down and enjoy!
