A rainy start

I’m sitting in my living room slash office in the heart of Vienna. I planned on writing in our courtyard, because it’s been a sunny day, the trees are in full bloom and I thought it’s great for Bea to spend some time between actual blades of grass even though she’s turned into quite the city Beagle girl in the past couple of months. So I made myself some coffee, grabbed a leash, poop bags and my laptop and off we went. I was sitting next to this majestic chestnut tree with leaves of rich green, my laptop, an espresso and all the right thoughts just waiting to be typed. I went for it and got lost in the words. Writing felt good and the outcome would mark the beginning of our blog about Bea vom Blümeltal, the cleft lip Beagle. In the corner of my eye I saw Bea running, sniffing, just having a good time. I felt inspired and right when Bea ran into the thick of the courtyard, I felt it. A drop. And then another and soon I saw a whole lot of small black dots appearing on the concrete. Talk about timing. I chugged the espresso, grabbed my computer and told Bea to come along. But she was gone. Not in the grass, not by the trees. Gone. It really started to pour down now, soI ran to the door. Lo and behold, there she was, sitting, her ears down, so she looked kind of like Dobby the elf, and staring at me. She scratched her left ear, got up and couldn’t wait to go inside.

Rain bad!

Now I’m back in our apartment with Bea. Needless to say she can’t stand the rain. Whenever it’s raining and she gets ever so slightly hit by half a raindrop, she stares at me with this hint of reproach. Almost like it’s my fault that it’s pouring. She just did it as well and now I can hear her snoring.

You know, I always wondered why Bea hates the rain so much. It doesn’t just cost her some effort to go outside, no she’d rather not go outside at all. Even if nature calls for big business. She can hold it for hours if need be. Some time ago I saw a video about dogs and rain. It helped me understand this situation. First, and I know that, Bea is not the only Beagle, let alone dog, who can’t stand the rain. That gave me some relief. But still I wondered. Bea is a Beagle, so her roots are in England. England. The uniseasonal country. The land soaking, pouring, cats and dogs, apocalyptic, Noachian floodish precipitation. But Bea. She might as well have her roots in the Sahara. Anyway. As far as I understand it, most dogs don’t have a problem the water as such, but with the sound the drops make, when they hit something. That sound coming from everywhere turns outside into a Daredevil situation for our four-legged friends. So unless your dog it up for a showdown with Kingpin or Bullseye, they’re not going to be a fan of rain anytime soon.

What's all this, you ask?

Bea’s still snoring and probably working through her traumatic experience. I on the other hand have also just had a rather unsettling episode. Remember my laptop that I grabbed to protect it from the rain? It didn’t save my very first, super inspired and absolutely majestic blog entry. So I typed what you just read. I hope you like it. These are our stories with Bea vom Blümeltal, inspired by our daily life with this awesome bundle of joy, princess and milquetoast, we call Bea, Beli and Hildegard.

It is my pleasure to write this blog. And I came up with three very different categories.

Beagle Bea and Max sharing a loving moment on a street in Vienna
Me and Bea on some random street in Vienna.

This here is the first one, in which I will be writing about our daily life with Bea. We'll dicuss tricks and tips. We'll talk about challenges and fun times. And we'll start out with a couple of posts on how we came to the decision to get a dog in the first place, why we got a Beagle and of course how Bea came into our lives.

The second part of this blog is written as Bea's POV vs my POV. It's called pretty standard, because I think everything we experience is pretty standard dog-human stuff. I'm really trying to view the world through Bea's eyes and smell the world through her snout. I am having fun in this category and I hope you'll enjoy it as well.

And to top it all off, I'll share my poetic side with you. Whenever I feel inspired by someting Bea does or makes me feel, I'll try to find a way to express my emotions and ideas through a poem. Check out the first poem in this series here. It's called What is a dog.

Now you!

And now it's your turn: Let me know in the comments what you think about the categories, the blog itself and if you have ideas or suggestions, bring 'em! I'm looking forward to reading them! Or write us an email beaglebeasworld@gmail.com.
